Securing your home
while you're away.

An empty house for a week is exactly what a burglar is looking for. The good news: the signs that give it away are all easy to fix, and with the right cameras you can check it from the beach.

The week before

  • Pause deliveries or ask a neighbour to collect parcels and post — a pile in the porch is a sign.
  • Put lights on schedules that vary a little night to night.
  • Ask a neighbour to park on your drive occasionally and move the bins.
  • Check the alarm works and everyone leaving knows how to set it.

The day you leave

  • Lock every window and door, including the side gate and the shed.
  • Don't post that you're away until you're back. Your friends aren't the only ones who can see it.
  • Set the alarm. If it's app-connected, check on your phone that it armed.

While you're there

With app-connected cameras you get an alert if a person is detected — not a cat, not the wind — with a snapshot, and you can look live. If something's wrong you can call a neighbour or the police from wherever you are. This is the single best reason for the app set-up to be done properly before you go.

What we'd add before a long trip

Person-only alerts on the outside cameras, a doorbell camera so callers see a house that answers, and an alarm that notifies you the moment a door opens. Remote monitoring is included with every system we fit.

Your property decides. Not the logo.

Questions

Good to know.

Can I watch my cameras abroad?

Yes — anywhere with internet. The recorder stays at home; your phone connects to it.

Should I leave the TV on?

A radio on a timer is a cheap, believable sign of life. A TV left on for a week is a fire risk and an electricity bill.

Do I need to tell my insurer?

Check the policy — some have an unoccupancy limit (often 30 days) beyond which cover changes.
